Getting around Ipoh is fairly simple; either you take a taxi, Grab, drive, or walk.
Continuing our journey for the day, our van driver chauffeured us from Restaurant Kam Wan Aneka Selera to Tong Sui Kai.
Tong Sui Kai
It is literally a stretch of roadside stalls under a long shack along Jalan Carrey. Eat by the road with cars driving by and looking for parking.
In a sense, it’s like a hawker centre, but it’s not like your typical hawker centre. You can only sit at the stall area where you ordered. No cross sitting allowed.
The tables are number coded to the corresponding stalls. The table that we sat at, focused on desserts and snacks.
We had ice kacang, ching poh leong, and other snacks for supper.

Plan B is an Asian fusion restaurant. The interior has a very industrial and modern feel.
As it was already in the afternoon, we ordered some light food and drinks to chill after a short walk through Concubine Lane and a long walk from Taman Jubilee.
We had some coffee, latte (hot), watermelon lychee frosty, classic chocolate brownie, and plain fries.
At the table, there was a QR code to scan to open the menu, create your order, and send to the kitchen.

Today, let’s stop over at Kacang Soya Lai Kee, otherwise known as Lai Kee Soya Bean at Jalan Theatre in Taman Jubilee, Ipoh. It is just behind Restoran Tauge Ayam Lou Wong and Sin Weng Fai Peanut Candy Shop.

Kacang Soya Lai Kee
Here, they serve kacang soya tanpa serbuk gipsum (soya bean without gipsum powder). The tau fu fa comes with either ginger syrup (sirap halia), Gula Melaka syrup (sirap gula melaka), or brown sugar syrup.
They also serve caramel custard.

Lot 10 is located at a cross junction in Bukit Bintang. It is the intersection where Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail meet. Many cars wait at the traffic lights and cross the junction.
Furthermore, the Bukit Bintang MRT and Bukit Bintang Monorial are just outside Lot 10. Parking is not really an issue as customers can also park in Lot 10 or Sungei Wang Plaza, and walk to Lot 10.
If you’re coming from Lot 10 parking lot, take the escalator or lift from the 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th floor down to LG. But if you’re coming from the Bukit Bintang MRT or monorial, take the escalator or stairs from the ground floor down to LG. Matcha Hero is not hard to miss, as it is directly in front of the Hu Tong entrance in Lot 10.
McDonalds have their drive thrus. Touch N Go is literally touch and go at tolls. In Penang, we’ve a eat and go cendol – Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul.
The famous Teochew chendul is easily recognisable by it’s pushcart and incredibly long queue. Being located along Lebuh Keng Kwee, a small road just off Jalan Penang, there are no tables and chairs to sit and eat. You’ve to stand by the roadside and eat, or tapau (take-away).
Queues are super long, but because it is fast moving, it won’t take long to be your turn.

From Penang to the Klang Valley
Founded in 1936 and with more than 80 years of history, Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul has come a long way. Undeniably, it is one of the popular cendol places even with franchises throughout Klang Valley.
For the non-Penangites, you can still indulge in the famous cendol in the franchises in the Klang Valley in Selangor, Malaysia. Of course, nothing beats the original. When in Penang, why not head directly to THE Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul itself in Lebuh Keng Kwee.
Damansara Uptown is no stranger as the place to hang out, eat, and have desserts. If after a plate of Damansara Uptown Hokkien Mee or a meal, and some jalan-jalan in Starling Mall; why not have dessert at Shugatori. Aptly named as SHUGATORI: THE DESSERT CAFE.
How to Get to Shugatori
Shugatori is located along Jalan SS 21/1a in Damansara Utama. It is not hard to miss as it is facing the main road – Jalan SS21/1. If you’re turning in from the SPRINT highway, it is on your right.
Parking may be a challenge during the day and night, as the parking spots tend to be filled with cars by office workers and people who frequent there.
Due to the limited street parking, you can park at Starling Mall or at Uptown 7 (elevated parking). Then walk across to Shugatori.

Kwong Wah is not hard to miss as it is just before the row of houses on Jalan 17/8 in Seksyen 17. The entrance, instead of facing houses, it faces Jalan 17/9 and SK Sri Damai field, widely. It has an open space in the front and an un-enclosed kitchen. You can actually see your asam laksa and cendol being prepared.
Parking is not hard to find. You can park along Jalan 17/9 or along any of the row of shops behind.

The interior is a fine blend of modernity and tradition. Even though the flooring is an antique and old pattern, yet it feels modern. The neon lights and lightings around the inside brings up the place from inside and add a touch to it.
Kwong Wah Ais Kacang
Bringing the taste of Melaka to PJ. Authentic gula melaka Ice Kacang using our secret family recipe handed down through generations since 1939.
Have a taste of their “must eat” and “our signature” food. Start with sour – Asam Laksa. End with sweet – Cendol. Both are filling together or on their own, separately.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is also called the Moon Festival or the Mooncake Festival. It traditionally falls on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, which is in September or early October in the Gregorian calendar. This is the night when the moon is at its fullest and brightest.
In 2020, the Mid-Autumn Festival or Mooncake Festival falls on 1st October 2020.
This line from a famous Song dynasty poem written by Su Shi, better known as Su Dongpo, perhaps best captures the spirit of Mid-Autumn Festival, an age-old event with roots in Chinese culture.
The festival probably originated as the worship of the moon among ancient peoples. As the nation grew in size and sophistication, the various traditions of lunar veneration amalgamated into a celebration of the full moon in autumn.
Before the Qin dynasty (221-206BC), it was already a significant date for the Chinese, who “welcomed the cold season on the night of the Mid-Autumn” and presented the king with fine fur garments. In the six centuries of the Han and Jin periods (206BC-AD420), there were sporadic records of mid-autumn celebrations but the festival wasn’t very popular, especially in northern China.

It was during the Tang dynasty (AD618-907) that Mid-Autumn Festival became a nationwide holiday. Folk tales associated with the festival and the moon – such as Chang’e’s lunar flight, Wu Gang’s Sisyphean task of felling the osmanthus tree, and the Jade Rabbit pounding medicinal herbs to make the elixir of life – were popularised, and parties under the full moon became fashionable in the capital Changan (present-day Xian). Scores of poems were written eulogising the moon at mid-autumn.
During the Northern Song dynasty (AD960-1127), the annual festival was officially set on the 15th day of the eighth month on the Chinese calendar, a date that is still observed. According to a detailed description of daily life in the capital Kaifeng, “On Mid-Autumn’s night, noble families decorated their pavilions and commoners vied with one another to occupy the drinking houses to enjoy the moon.” They “nibbled on small pastries that resembled the moon”, with fillings that were savoury and sweet. The festivities would go on until dawn.
Mooncake Today Symbolizes Family Reunion
In Chinese culture, roundness symbolizes completeness and togetherness. A full moon symbolizes prosperity and reunion for the whole family. Children can be seen carrying colorful lanterns and walking around the neighborhoods.
It brings back memories of my cousins and I hanging lanterns in the garden.
Candle in the lantern
Eventually, we got bored of lanterns and played with candles. We’ll create dominoes, lines, and patterns of candles. It felt like lighting a birthday cake but without the cake.
The best was the bonfire. We’ll create our mini campfire and watch the candles burn. No stories, just silence around the burning candles.

The Mooncake Festival has become very commercialized. Shops tout mooncakes of every conceivable flavor, type, and packaging.

You can park in the inner lane, along the main road, or behind the shops around the housing area.
After lunch or dinner at Ribs King, Washoku Japanese Restaurant, or Restaurant New Seaview, you can walk over to Fluffed Cafe for dessert. Better be there early as usually later afternoons or after 8.00pm is when the crowds line up to enter the cafe.
