Oxford Covered Market

This is a throwback post to my trip in Oxford in 2016 and photos posted go back to then.

The Covered Market is a historic market with permanent stalls and shops in a large covered structure in central Oxford, England.

The market is located to the north of the High Street towards the western end between Cornmarket Street and Turl Street. To the north is Market Street. Most of the entrances are from the High Street and Market Street (with four entrances from each street). It is also possible to gain access from Cornmarket via the Golden Cross alley, with its small up-market shops.

The Covered Market is home to numerous traders, around half being food retailers, including market shops selling fresh food such as greengrocers and butchers (including some producing the Oxford sausage). There are also other shops, such as gift shops, bakeries and sandwich shops.

The market opens daily with the opening times stated below. Yet, we recommend checking with individual shops for their specific trading hours.

Monday: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM
Tuesday: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM
Wednesday: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM
Thursday: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM
Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM

A Saturday at Portobello Market in London

Here’s a throwback post to my trip in the UK and more specifically to Portobello Market in Longon in 2016. Earlier, we visited Borough Market. Today, we take a trip back to Portobello Market.

How to get to Portobello Market

Like us, if you’re travelling via the tube, stop at Ladbroke Grove station on the Circle or Hammersmith & City line.

Portobello Market is open from Monday to Saturday, 8am to 7pm. We visited on a Saturday, which is the main day and the market was in full swing, as you’ll see below.

Portobello Market

Quoted as London’s world-famous market road by visitportobello.com, you’ll find stalls selling antiques, arcades, bric-a-brac, fashion & clothing, fruit & veg, and food.

Portobello Road has one of the most famous street markets in the world and is home to one of the UK’s most diverse communities. It has a rich history dating back to the 19th century with millions of visitors visiting the market each year. The market stalls stretch for a mile all the way down Portobello Road and round the corner into Golborne Road. Whether you are just out for a stroll, people watch, looking for a bargain or out to grab a bite to eat, Portobello Road is a great place to spend your time exploring.

The west London site is most famous for having one of the world’s largest antique, bric-a-brac and vintage clothing markets. It’s a location that attracts tourists, locals and celebrities from all walks of life. Visitors can find every type of collectable from stamps, jewellery, furniture, vintage clothing, fresh produce, delicious street food, and freshly baked goods. The street is also home to some incredibly talented musicians busking on the streets. Originally known for its excellent choice of fresh produce, some families have been selling on Portobello Road for generations.

After a cold, rainy morning and a long walk along Portobello Road, we stopped for a strawberry & cream crepe and hot sweet chocolate in Portobello.

Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok

How to start the weekend in Bangkok? For us, it was the second day (Saturday) of our holiday in Bangkok. And after a fulfilling buffet the previous night at Baiyoke Sky Hotel, we needed to burn some calories.

How to Get to Chatuchak Market

Chatuchak Market is on Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road, Chatuchak, Bangkok.

In addition to taking Grab or taxi around Bangkok, you can also ride the train, and get off at Kamphaeng Phet MRT station on the MRT blue line or the Saphan Khwai on the BTS Sukhumvit Line.

Phahonyothin Road

Chatuchak Weekend Market

The market spans about 35 acres with more than 15,000 stalls and 11,000 vendors, divided into 27 sections. In Chatuchak Market, you can find many different kinds of goods, including antique collections, accessories, thai instruments, books, teen clothing and accessories, used clothing and shoes, arts, paintings, carvings, spas, incenses, handcrafts, artificial flowers, clothing accessories, shoes, postcard souvenirs, pets, tablewares, ceramics, silver and home decorations, dried food, clothing, hiking equipments and leather, silk, photo frames, handicrafts, miscellaneous, and others.

Most parts of the market have sheltered walkways, so you can shop under protection from the sun and the rain. In the covered sections, you can find stalls that sell flowers, spices, clothes, and more.
